Churching It Up

Have you ever misheard a song lyric? You’re not alone. There’s a hilarious website called Kiss This Guy that exists to comfort people just like you.

I’ve been known to garble a song or two in my time. My music mishap: in elementary school I heard the song “Shameless” by Garth Brooks. Instead of belting out, “I’m Shameless” I thought the country legend was screaming, “I’m Shaving!” (Listen to the song for yourself and tell me if you hear it too or if I’m crazy.) I understood the song a lot more once I found out what word the cowboy crooner was actually using.

Songs tend to make more sense when we know and understand the words the artists are singing. The same can be said for the scriptures. God’s word becomes much clearer to the reader when we know and understand the real words that He uses.

You can find many words in many different translations of the Bible that are misunderstood. One of the biggest words that we don’t have a clear understanding of today is the word worship.  (more…)

Breaking Character

Did you have a good Christmas break? What was the best part for you? Seeing family? Getting presents? Getting out of school and sleeping in?

For me it was the Ski Trip that our church went on over the break. It was my first time ever on the ski slopes and even though I only made it out there for a couple of hours, sliding my way down the mountain was still an exhilarating new experience.

But honestly, as anyone who’s ever been skiing can tell you, the real best part of skiing is the ski pants.

For weeks I dreaded having to go buy ski clothes, knowing that I would be dropping at least $100 on clothes I would rarely use. Finally a couple of days before we headed out on our trip I stopped at Burlington Coat Factory to see what sort of deals I could find. I snatched up the cheapest jacket and pants that I could find in my size.

When I got home and tried on the pants, I was transported to a new world of comfort. Never had I slipped on a pair of pants that fit me so right! I wore the ski pants for the rest of the night and I never wanted to take them off. The pants suited me well on the mountain as well and by the time the trip was over I was quite satisfied with my purchase.

That was until I got home and began washing clothes. As I unpacked my suitcase and started packing the washing machine, something caught my eye on my ski pants that I had not noticed before. (more…)

The Ultimate Thirst Quencher

Cookie Dough Sport

Cookie Dough will not quench your thirst. One of my favorite SNL commercials (linked above) highlights this point to great effect. After a marathon bike ride, a tough day on the baseball field, or any type of athletic activity, a bottle full of Cookie Dough Sport is the last thing you want to pour down your throat.

The best thing to satisfy your thirst in any situation is water. It is the simplest drink of all. It is pretty much the only drink we need. Yet we complicate it, as we do with so many other things in our life. We use it to make soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and a million other types of sugary, fattening concoctions.

There’s no doubting these drinks are delicious, and I certainly wouldn’t want to live in a world without them. But when our mouths are dry and the sweat is pouring off our face, what we need is water. (more…)
